Chapter excerpts...
My body crashed against the ceramic tile of the kitchen floor. I screamed before I felt the pain. It felt like knives plunging into the lower right side of my back. I shrieked and howled.
- Drama Queen (in section Red)
"She just lay there staring at me a casualty of the war. I stepped back from the table. Lieutenant Chambers raised a sharp knife. A huge machete."
- An Interview with Phillip (in section Red)
I sat in my grey office chair in Dil's Accounting Services. I typed at my worn veneer desk. I stared at the mint green walls. I sighed. I paused. I twirled my chair to face the window. Sun poured into the room. Summertime.
- Barbed Wire ( in section Blue)
I felt alienated from my culture at a young age. In university, I avoided my Indian peers because to them I was a wash. My lack of cultural knowledge and enthusiasm washed away my ethnicity. Wash."
- F^%!ing South Asians ( in section Blue)
Brown folding chairs curved in rows facing a black platform. On the platform a band called the Jesus Freaks fiddled with their instruments setting up for their performance. The band members wore torn blue jeans and grungy t-shirts. The drummer flung his long dreads as he rapped on his drums.
I pointed at two empty chairs under the basketball net, "Eh, I found us some seats, Vikram."
- Jesus Freaks ( in section Blue)
The South Asian Society's formal, Kismat, pumped R&B and hip-hop tracks. I glanced at the bodies twisting and winding to the music. Just a bunch of horny brown kids looking to hook up.
- Double Rum & Cokes ( in section Yellow)
Author's Personal Message
There are plenty of books written by talented authors but few write about the South Asian experience. I am born in Canada and was brought up by my conservative Punjabi mother and my somewhat liberal Kenyan father. I constantly dealt with the clash of traditional Indian values versus western values.
This book is inspired by real situations and experiences that I witnessed occur within the South Asian community in Toronto. It is close to my heart. I wrote fresh stories that avoid the stereotypes of arranged marriages and so on, but choose to focus on real university or college level adult experiences.
